Day #19 – Lone Palm

Fruitcakes! It’s an album title, a song title and a badge of honor!  In an earlier post I mentioned that this album was my first new release that I purchased as a Parrothead. In the previous year, I had first acquired the greatest hit’s CD, Songs You Know By Heart, and several others which had previously been released. But Fruitcakes, well I knew it was going to be released, and I waited for it eagerly. And that beautiful CD was worth every penny that I spent on it.

Day #19 – Lone Palm

“We sail from the Port of Indecision, Young and Wild, with oh so much to learn”

This song was released on JB’s 1994 classic album Fruitcakes, but it had been making appearances in live shows several years prior. In the late eighties, Jimmy toured with the Neville Brothers, and as Jimmy tells the story, they were staying in a hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio. The hotel wasn’t the most desirable place and was surrounded by construction. One of the Neville brothers, Jimmy couldn’t recall which, made the comment that the view out the window was so bad that no bird would even fly by it. And a song was born!

Honestly, I am not sure how Jimmy turned that random comment about a shitty view into two beach chairs and a lone palm along with papayas and mangos and reggaes and tangos, but he did it. That was an incredible part of the magical, lyrical quality of his songwriting!

BTW, this songs’ original title seems to have been No Bird Flies By My Window, or at least that’s how he introduced it in live shows prior to the albums’ release but became Lone Palm sometime along the way. And lone palms have become some of the imagery tied -then, now and forever- to Jimmy and Parrotheads everywhere.

Please enjoy Lone Palm.  I have included the link in the comments below.

After I initially posted this on my personal Facebook page, I got several comments that tied this song as their “favorite” of Jimmy’s songs. I was again struck by the diversity of his music and his fan base and how we all can be touched in different ways by one song versus another song. That is really part of the beauty of the music that Jimmy gifted to us, isn’t it?

Stacy Loves Buffett

I was born and raised and still live in Montana- far, far away from the sea and the beaches that Jimmy Buffett loved and wrote about and promoted with his music and laid-back lifestyle, but I caught the bug and have been a proud Parrothead since I was nineteen years old, and I will proudly continue to carry that banner for help others appreciate the gift of his music.
