Day #23 – La Vie Dansante

Dancing. Singing. Laughing. These are all things that help lighten our spirit and bring us joy. Joy is something I never really tried to define before because I think people just know it and understand it and feel it. But the textbook definition is “a feeling of great pleasure and happiness”, “a state of happiness or felicity”, and “a cause of delight”; and joy is something we should all be lucky enough to find in our lives.

Day #23 – La Vie Dansante

All my French language skills pretty much are owed to Jimmy and his music. La Vie Dansante loosely translates to “the dancing life”, it’s more a Cajun than French and pretty much describes a life not of dancing directly, but of ease and joy, carefree and happy. The great Aaron Neville loved this song so much he put it on one of his own albums, though of course, I prefer Jimmy’s version.

This song has been on my mind for several days. It’s soft and gentle, almost like a lullaby, and it feels comfortable! Maybe it’s the cool, cloudy, rainy weather that inspired me to share this song at this time.

La Vie Dansante was released on JB’s 1984 album Riddles In The Sand. The album cover has Jimmy in jeans and a cowboy hat but he’s on a white sand beach with a guitar, and its original title was Gulf and Western, a phrase that will later be tied to Jimmy’s personal music style.

“That’s why I wander and follow La Vie Dansante, On a night wind that takes me to where I want, that’s all I want, La Vie Dansante”.

I think you’ll enjoy this lovely song, and its overall message of following the path to joy. I’ve included the link in the comments below.

Follow your path to joy, whatever that means exactly. It will be different for each of us, but Jimmy was great at setting an example for us to follow. I like to think that he lived most of his life on the path to joy. And he has left us wonderful songs and stories to help us each try to find our own path to our individual joy!

Stacy Loves Buffett

I was born and raised and still live in Montana- far, far away from the sea and the beaches that Jimmy Buffett loved and wrote about and promoted with his music and laid-back lifestyle, but I caught the bug and have been a proud Parrothead since I was nineteen years old, and I will proudly continue to carry that banner for help others appreciate the gift of his music.
