Day #20 – Landfall
Landfall is defined as an arrival at land after a sea or air voyage. Or in the case of hurricanes and tropical storms, as the intersection of the eye of the storm with the coastline. For the most part, storms lose some of their vigor once they have made landfall, but that isn’t always the case. I think Jimmy’s song version can be seen to include a little bit of all of the above, or like many of his songs, have the ability to change in meaning depending on the perspective and mood of the listener.

Day #20 – Landfall
Landfall was released on Jimmy’s 1977 classic album Changes In Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, and though it was never released as a single, it is an absolute classic of a song! This whole record was jammed with great music and every time I hear this song, it revs me up.
“Some days were laughter, others were tears, If I had it all to do over again, I’d just get myself drunk and jump right back in.”
It’s that kind of song- revved up honesty with a rollicking rhythm, JB’s lyrical charm and a nod to escapism. It’s about finding a moment or two of peace by stepping away, however long it takes. Then stepping back in, recharged and ready to move on a find some joy in this life.
Sometimes stepping away involves calmness and rest, sometimes it involves adventure and excitement and freedom, whatever your personal freedom might be.

Jimmy’s Landfall gives us some of his great quotes, including “Somedays were laughter, others were tears” and “Just tryin’ to make a little sense of it all” and “Sail away, that’s the way I survive” which touches on how Jimmy seemed to be making his career work in those early years: write songs and record a record, tour until he nearly dropped and then “sail away”. I understand and appreciate the way you made it work, Jimmy, and I thank you for it all.
