Day #7 – Vampires, Mummies and the Holy Ghost
This was another ear worm song for me. It’s been happening a lot since Jimmy passed. I do not think I am the only Parrothead that is experiencing this. I am certainly grateful for the songs, and it did help me pick songs for my daily share, and glad for a little nudge from the universe.

Day #7 – Vampires, Mummies and the Holy Ghost
Yesterday while I was trying to sleep, the chorus to this song just kept playing over and over in my mind, so I decided that it needed to be shared for today’s tribute.
This song came out on the 1994 album Fruitcakes. I was so excited about the release of this album and I bought the CD as soon as I could. It was only the summer before that I became a dedicated Buffett fan, and while I owned several of JB’s records, this was the first new release since I became part of the Parrothead Nation.
And it’s an album full of fabulous, witty songs, but something about the upbeat lyrics, with hints of comical monsters sandwiched in an upbeat rhythm that stuck out to me first and foremost of all the songs on the record. However, just like much of JB’s music, there is meaning under the more obvious meaning, with hints of struggles with therapy, childhood issues, and some underlying darkness.
A person doesn’t create what Jimmy did in his life without walking through some shadows and facing some monsters – and yet overcoming with an upbeat steel drum line for harmony and an incredibly charming sense of humor.
Trust me, you’ll find it catchy!

Some of the mentions in this song are quite humorous. I never had a fear of mummies, maybe because my Dad used to dress up as a mummy almost every year for Halloween Haunted Houses. But Vampires … now that is a little spooky. Yet I loved The Lost Boys, and Anne Rice made me look at vampires in a much different way than I did as a child. I was never afraid of the Holy Ghost, and I doubt Jimmy was either, but that is what makes that part of the song so very entertaining.
And as to the darker stuff that is hinted at, we all have some underlying childhood issues and underlying darkness. It is part of what makes us human, our experiences and how we learn from them and grow from them.
Jimmy wrote a kick-ass song. I love it! And I connect to it on multiple levels. Also, it’s really a lot of fun!
