Day #10 – Incommunicado

I explain in my original post, which is just below, why I chose this song for this day, which was September 11th.  It also was another one of those earworm songs, that I could not shake, and it seemed fitting for the date.

Also, I feel I should mention that I did not know before my original post, between John MacDonald and Travis McGee, which was the author, and which was the hero of the novels. I know now and have added the first book in the series to my reading list. I hope to get around to it this winter when I am dreaming of Boat Drinks and trying not to shoot my freezer!

Day #10 – Incommunicado

This is one of the most beautiful songs that I think Jimmy ever wrote. It’s about sad news, a sense of shock and loss, and how we process that. To me, it really sums up much of the emotion from September 11th, and how it still affects us as a population.

This song was written in 1981, and was on his Coconut Telegraph album, long before terrorists changed our world twenty years later.

Jimmy wrote this song after hearing that John Wayne had died. He also included mention of one of his literary heroes, John MacDonald and even when you are a mile high in the Colorado Rockies, the Florida Keys still manage to sneak into this song. But that’s how he told stories and I’m grateful for all the imagery he could provide with some lyrics and a melody.

Please enjoy Incommunicado; many of you have probably never heard it, but I promise you it’s worth a listen.

When I posted this, I was speaking to a diverse crowd, and many of them do not know every song by heart like I feel like I do.  My Dad had never heard this song, and he really liked it. Listened to it several times. There is just something special about this song, the words, the melody, something about it catches you and does not let go. This one touches me deeply every time I hear it!

Stacy Loves Buffett

I was born and raised and still live in Montana- far, far away from the sea and the beaches that Jimmy Buffett loved and wrote about and promoted with his music and laid-back lifestyle, but I caught the bug and have been a proud Parrothead since I was nineteen years old, and I will proudly continue to carry that banner for help others appreciate the gift of his music.
