Day #31 – Gypsies In The Palace

Day #31 – Gypsies In The Palace

In the sense of this song, I define gypsy as a free-spirited person or one who lives a nomadic existence, or raids pantries full of food and booze. In concert, Jimmy has introduced this song as “the scariest song you’ll hear tonight” with his trademark sense of humor and gentle drawl. I never got the chance to housesit for Jimmy Buffett, so I can’t promise if I might not have acted a bit like a gypsy myself. Cheers to whomever inspired the writing of this vastly entertaining song.

Day #31 – Gypsies In The Palace

This is a fun one! Gypsies In The Palace was released on Jimmy’s 1985 album Last Mango In Paris.

This song was co-written by Glenn Frey of the Eagles. Jimmy and The Eagles go way back into the mid 70’s. In 1978, when Jimmy broke his leg (twice) he did it playing at an Eagles charity softball game. Glenn Frey also sings and plays on this studio recording. The other co-writer is Will Jennings, who you may never have heard of but has successfully written many songs, including Tears In Heaven with Eric Clapton and he wrote My Heart Will Go On, performed by Celine Dion for the Titanic soundtrack.

“I have heard that some of the great parties of all time have been at my house – when I wasn’t there” – Jimmy Buffett

Jimmy never came out and said who or when or where exactly but did say the song was based on true experience. There are many rumors that it was house sitters in Aspen. Rumors that “Snake” in the song was Ken “The Snake” Stabler, longtime friend of Jimmy’s and NFL quarterback for the Oakland Raiders who had a reputation for some very wild behavior. We’ll probably never know the exact details, but it led to a fun song.

We are introduced to The Order Of Sleepless Knights, a very punny nod to party animals who don’t sleep at night. And a couple dudes who what to free some damsels from their condo’s and bring them over for an epic party with lots of beer. This song is also one of several where Jimmy refers to himself as Bubba, which I always love!

Another interesting aspect of this song in the spoken introduction by none other than actor Gregory Peck. Jimmy knew some people and always seemed to have a fun time.

This single made it to 56 on the US Billboard Hot Country singles chart, which I think is pretty good for a song to honor liquor cabinet, pantry busting house sitters. Part of me wants to know all the details, the who, when, and where, and part of me likes to enjoy the mystery of the whole scenario. What do you think?

Stacy Loves Buffett

I was born and raised and still live in Montana- far, far away from the sea and the beaches that Jimmy Buffett loved and wrote about and promoted with his music and laid-back lifestyle, but I caught the bug and have been a proud Parrothead since I was nineteen years old, and I will proudly continue to carry that banner for help others appreciate the gift of his music.
