Day #37 – Beach House On The Moon

Day #37 – Beach House On The Moon

I love that this song talks about curiosity, but also hints about the never-ending questions we all have in life, child or adult. “Teach your children to go fishing with their minds” is something I touched on in my original post, but I want to investigate the concept more. Jimmy himself strikes me as a person who was incredibly curious, and I imagine he was a child full of questions. And maybe there were never enough answers for him? And in that way, I think he went searching for his own answers, and he found them in his songs, his experiences, his travels, and his friendships.

Day #37 – Beach House On The Moon

Beach House On The Moon was released in 1999, on the album of the same name. Sticking to my current run of songs that JB wrote for his children, this song is for youngest child, a son, Cameron Marley Buffett.

Cameron was born in 1994 and completed the family when he joined it. His middle name, Marley, is Jimmy’s way honoring the late, great Bob Marley, who Jimmy was a huge fan of. Cameron, like his dad, is an avid traveler and loves music. And dogs, also like his father.

This song is less well known than his sisters’ songs but is no less special. I have always loved it, but I love anything about the moon, so it’s not surprising. It also managed to get an album named after it, something his sisters cannot claim.

The song lyrics mention a boat trip on the Nile, with a young Cameron full of curiosity and questions and developing logic which makes him wonder about his father’s whimsical responses.

Jimmy’s beautiful lyrics in regard to children are, “Teach your children to go fishing with their minds”. I’m full of curiosity so this concept really appeals to me!

Something I feel like I missed in my original post was the beauty of the lyrics Jimmy wrote.  Here are just a few phrases from a song full of lyrical gold:

“I saw him through my telescope, On a cloudless night in June, As he rested between voyages, On this beach house on the moon.”

“He’s the Admiral of the ocean, The Lone Eagle in the sky, he gave me my first sextant and he taught me how to fly.”

“There are windows to the galaxies, And hallways to the past, There are trapdoors to the future, And a splintered ancient mast”.

If I had the opportunity, I would have asked Jimmy about these three lines. Maybe somebody did and one day I will find his answers. Maybe I am supposed to come up with my own answers, tied to the curiously these lines stirred?

Thank you, Jimmy! And thank you, Cameron, for inspiring your Dad to write these lines.

Stacy Loves Buffett

I was born and raised and still live in Montana- far, far away from the sea and the beaches that Jimmy Buffett loved and wrote about and promoted with his music and laid-back lifestyle, but I caught the bug and have been a proud Parrothead since I was nineteen years old, and I will proudly continue to carry that banner for help others appreciate the gift of his music.
